I'm enjoying the cool weather during my layover in Vancouver, and I took the opportunity to make a massive photo upload...

I made a batch of peanut sauce last week, and it came out really well. Unfortunately, when I went to make dinner tonight, heating up some udon noodles and pulling out the last bit of sauce, I found that the coconut in the sauce had spoiled and the whole batch had gone rotten.
Now, I know this doesn't seem like a big deal, but this really a sad event in my day! I put a lot of effort into that sauce! Oh well, at least I made another batch up at the last minute, but it wasn't half as good as it should have been and as soon as I get back after labor day, I'll whip up some more. |

I was sitting in Borders reading what the entry requirements are to Singapore for Malaysian citizens, and laughed out loud while reading this. It also applies to US citizens...

Well, I have to say I had a pretty good time here in Shanghai during my brief stopover.
Saturday afternoon, I flew in from Macau, had a relative breeze through immigration, and took the Maglev in from the airport to its terminal, which is still an inconvenient distance from downtown. The flight, arriving in a new country, and getting lost on two taxis (apparently there are two streets in Shanghai that have the same English spelling?) had worn me down to the point that I could do little more than take a shower and get dinner in the hotel restaurant. Dinner was relaxing, though--I had bullfrog with celery in chili sauce, and sauteed vegetables with dragonfruit.
Sunday morning, I set out early to take a walking tour of the city. I walked through The Bund as they call it, and as I made it toward the river that looks toward Pudong (one of the more modern areas of the city), there was someone with a Central Asian look to him selling a giant nut cake, and of course I had to eat it. Walking back toward my hotel, I ran into a couple of Chinese English language students in a park who invited me to tea with them. Altogether I think we tried 7 different types of tea (out of 800 in the shop) and I'm coming home with a souvenir of some sort of fruity-flavored tea.
We split up after tea, with plans to meet up again for dinner (didn't quite happen, oh well), and I went walking around into the old-town part of Shanghai. There's a big mall/tourist shopping complex where you can haggle your way into getting just about any type of souvenir you'd want, and I picked up a nice-ish set of chopsticks (something I've been meaning to get for a while! but I'm not sure if I overpaid). I also got pulled into an art gallery, and there I ended up picking up a 5-ft by 3-ft (ish) black-and-white landscape painting which will do nicely in my new place! I did this at a completely reasonable, price, too--around $125. Sure it's not a masterpiece, but it appears to be excellent quality and I can hang on to it for a while. Now I just have to frame it... |

I spent the night here at the airport (arrived at 10:20pm, now it's 6am, another hour to go before I leave). My legs hurt like hell, but at least I managed to catch a couple of hours of sleep, and I feel much fresher after taking a shower.
The jaunt over to Indonesia was probably the most worthwhile trip I've had in a long time. Not at all because of Bali (I fully plan to make another post ranting about that experience), but because the trip to Tambora took me to see a lot of things I wouldn't have seen otherwise, and the hike itself was a good experience.
Anyway, I'm really, really tired right now. I just want to get on the next plane and snooze all the way to Tokyo, where I can take my next shower!

I found a new blog, and although I think that most of the people who post to it are frat boy 10 years later, it makes for an interesting read. It's weekly stories from consultants about traveling, debauchery, and the bullshit they spew.
My favorite entry so far, followed closely by this one.

| » Back to Switzerland! |
Well, after about a year since the last visit, I'm planning on going back to Switzerland for a long weekend at the tail end of a business trip to South Africa and Romania. I think I'll also spend a couple of days in Munich, since it's a fairly easy stopover (I'm passing through there twice on this trip anyway).

Anyone feel like going to Europe in March?
I'll be passing through Munich on March 14, and am tempted to go somewhere in the neighborhood through the 18th.
I was thinking Spain, France, or somewhere within Germany. Anyone interested?
